Everything a run writes is built from one output root, so the samples sit next to the table. Two files can hold them: <root>_samples.npz, which every sampler writes and which carries the parameter names, and <root>.h5, the emcee backend, which is all that older runs left behind. The first is preferred, the second is the fallback.
